This page gives information on the different types of band heater that we sell. Exactly the same as those supplied by the original equipment manufacturer accept less expensive.

Lowest Cost Standard Nozzle Band Heaters

  • Standard Mica nozzle band heaters are manufactured to order. 
  • The manufacturing lead time for these types of band heaters is 3 to 5 working days.
  • Two metal braided power leads or fibreglass insulated leads exiting, one either side of the clamp gap, is the standard design (See picture opposite).
  • The maximum operating temperature for these heaters is 300 °C / 527ºF.
  • The maximum recommended watts density is 6 watts/cm or 40 watts per square inch.  This reduces as the heater increases in size above those shown in the attached datasheet.
  • The Maximum Diameter to width ratio is 1:3.

Buddy Band Nozzle Heaters
Buddy Band 50mm Dia x 40mm wide
  • The Buddy Band combines the standard design of nozzle band heater with an internal type J thermocouple.
  • These unique heaters are primarily used for heating the nozzles on plastic injection moulding machines.  They could be used to heat and control the temperature of any metal cylindrical object.
  • They are manufactured to order.  Standard manufacturing lead time is 3 to 5 working days.  A breakdown service is available at no extra cost but I would need to check the production work load before quoting how soon you could have them.
  • The temperature sensor is type J calibration and it is a grounded junction.  The thermocouple leads would be IEC colour coded.
  • The Buddy band is a registered trade name for Resistance Heaters Ltd.

Wedge-Lock nozzle band heaters

All the standard specifications of nozzle band heaters, shown in the table above, can be supplied with a wedge-lock clamp. This method of clamping is used where there is insufficent room to use the standard flange clamps or roller barrel clamps. We typically have these heaters made to order in 3 to 5 working days. We can supply quicker but would need to consult with production before offering a faster service.  The dimensions of the wedge-Lock can vary depending on the size of the nozzle band heater. The maximum recommended operating temperature for wedge-Lock nozzle band heaters is 300ºC / 572ºF.

Mica band heater with tube lead exit style
Tube exit nozzle band heater

These heaters are primarily used for heating the nozzle tips on plastic injection moulding machines.  They are a fabricated heater but they do offer a more sealed design than the standard nozzle heater band.  One of the most delicate parts on any nozzle band heater is where the leads enter the heater.  The lead entry on a tube exit design is more robust because the tube offers additional protection to the lead entry.  This means that this design of heater is more suitable for moulding materials such as Nylon.

  • The tube exit is typically angled at 45 degrees although other angles could be supplied.  The tube does not extend past the edge of the heater.
  • The maximum diameter to width ratio is 1:3.
  • These heaters are manufactured to order.  The standard manufacturing lead time is 3 to 5 working days.  An emergency break down service on manufacture is available, at no extra, but I would need to speak with production before quoting you.
  • The maximum safe working temperature for the tube exit design of heater is 300ºC / 572ºF.
  • The maximum watts density is 3.5 watts/cm² or 25 watts /in².
  • This design offers a single metal braided lead exit with two, fibreglass insulated power leads and an earth lead.
  • I can supply these heaters rated at 380 Vac or 415 Vac that are connected across two phases.

Brass Sheathed Sealed Band Heater
Brass sealed band heater

These heaters are not currently produced in the UK. These heaters have a seamless brass sheath which makes them ideal for applications with leaky nozzles or for applications where the heater needs to be immersed in a liquid or sealed against moisture ingress. (NB. The lead entry of the heater is not sealed). They use mica as an insulation material and their maximum working temperature is 300°C. The standard band heaters have an axial lead exit that is angled at 45°. Boy injection moulding machines use this type of heater to heat the adapter.

The stock products have 1000mm long stainless steel braided lead protection and come with two power leads and an earth lead. The leads are all fibreglass insulated. The maximum allowable watts density (i.e. power divided by the heater surface area) for the brass sealed band heater is 6 watts / cm².

Brass sealed band heater (621kb)

Stainless Steel sheathed Sealed Nozzle band heater

These heaters are not currently produced in the UK. These heaters have been designed to meet the markets need for nozzle band heaters, with mica insulation, that can have higher wattages and withstand higher working temperatures.  The stainless steel sheath offers better protection from the plastic corrosive action and are hermetically sealed to prevent plastic ingress.

Standard Features

  • 101 Standard designs range from 25mm inside diameter x 30mm wide to 100mm inside diameter x 60mm wide can be despatched in one working week.
  • As a guide, For a minimum order quantity of 6 heaters the prices range from £29.70 each net for smallest sizes to £40.36 each net for largest sizes.
  • Watts densities of standard sizes range from 5.5 watts/cm² for small sizes upto 6.37 watts/cm² for the largest sizes. We can offer watts densities up to 7.75 watts / cm² but they take longer to supply.
  • The Maximum width for standard designs is 60mm. We can offer wider heaters but they would take longer for us to supply.
  • Working temperature of 380ºC / 716ºF. 
  • We can supply these heaters with an inbuilt, type J, thermocouple. Again they would take longer to supply.
  • The standard range of heaters come with 1000mm long stainless steel braided lead protection. 2 x power plus an earth lead all PTFE insulated. You can have longer leads but they would take longer to supply.
  • The standard range of heaters come with 45º axial exit (See picture above). Also available upon request are axial 5º, 15º or 30º and radial or tangential exits 5º, 15º, 30º and 45º. we require more time to supply these other lead exit options.
  • We can offer pure nickel or copper nickel conductors with silicon sleeve leads with a maximum working temperature of 180ºC / 356ºF. They would take longer than one week to supply.

  • I normally produce a technical drawing.  This helps the manufacturer and ensures that fewer mistakes are made.
  • Mica band electrical heating elements are capable of operating up to temperatures of 300°C / 572ºF if closed loop three term (i.e. PID) control is used.
  • The maximum recommended watts density for mica band heaters is 25 watts / in² or 3.5 watts / cm².

Mica Band heaters with Brass liner

We recently had an enquiry to heat a part that was 420mm diameter and had 8 x 50mm wide equally spaced cutouts arounds its circumference.  We offered a standard mica band heater with an 18 gauge brass liner. See picture.  The brass liner helped the band heater to dissipate / conduct its heat to the part.

  • We can despatch, made-to-order, Ceramic Knuckle Band Heaters to UK Mainland destinations in 4 to 6 working days.  Sooner if required but we would have to consult with production before offering a breakdown service.
  • We normally produce a technical drawings, of the heater, to speed up the quoting and manufacturing process.  This helps production and ensures fewer mistakes are made.
  • Ceramic knuckle band heaters are capable of operating at temperatures as high as 650°C / 1200ºF.
  • The maximum recommended watts density for ceramic knuckle band heaters is 45 watts / square inch or 7 watts / square centimetre.
  • Vented shroud heaters are available for air cooled extruder barrel heater applications.
  • expansion bolt clamps are available for large diameter or multiple segment heaters typically used on blown film die applications.
  • Terminal box, plug, post or flying lead termination options are available.
  • Single or 3 phase heaters can be offered.
  • Heaters can be produced in two or more segments for heating large diameters.
